Ceramic bearings from Germany

Ball bearings

Non-magnetic ceramic bearings and all-ceramic bearings made of zirconium oxide (CZ-T6 bearings) are primarily used in pump and motor construction and with critical media such as aggressive cleaning agents, salt solutions, acids and alkalis.


Mixed ceramic bearings made of ZrO2 rings with Si3N4 balls (CZN bearings) provide good solutions when various difficult application conditions occur at the same time, such as high speeds and high temperatures.

Silicon nitride and silicon carbide are used because of their high hardness and mechanical strength, especially under abrasive and high mechanical loads. Ceramic bearings made of Si3N4 silicon nitride ceramic (CN bearings) withstand thermal loads of over 1000°C. Gas-pressure sintered Si3N4 (HIP) is particularly suitable for rolling bearing technology for machine components such as balls, needles and cylindrical rollers.

Plain bearings

In addition to roller bearings, plain bearings are the bearing concept most frequently used in machine, pump and device construction. Plain bearings are used wherever there is little installation space and where machine components have to move in a stable, flexible manner with a certain load capacity and with as little friction as possible. The difference between plain bearings and roller bearings lies in the operating principle. In the plain bearing, two components that move relative to each other are in direct contact with each other and cause a certain resistance due to sliding friction. The coefficient of friction (coefficient of friction) can be kept low by using a low-friction, low-wear material pairing, by appropriate surface treatment (surface quality), by a geometry adapted to the circumstances, by media lubrication or by creating a permanent full lubrication (lubricating film). Direct contact between rotating machine components causes wear on the contact surfaces, which limits the service life of the plain bearing.

Gehrig® uses the same technical ceramics as plain bearing materials as for ceramic roller bearings.

Components made of technical ceramic


The following basic ceramic types are available for structural elements and components made of technical ceramics: Components made of very inexpensive aluminum oxide (Al2O3) are ideal for very abrasive and high loads on wearing parts. Whether as deflection rollers in the wire and thread guide, cutting tool, tail thread guide, thread guide or wire guide, Al2O3 can be used in many ways as a component in the textile or wire industry. Zirconium oxide (also zirconium oxide, zirconium oxide, zirconia, ZrO2) is another inexpensive ceramic that is particularly suitable for composite components due to its special properties like steel. Thermal expansion coefficient and mechanical strength are very similar. Nevertheless, zirconium oxide is harder than many types of steel and has a remarkable tribology. The non-oxide ceramics silicon nitride (also silicon nitride, Si3N4, Si3N4-HIP) and silicon carbide (also silicon carbide, SiC) complete the range. Like SiC, Si3N4 is very hard, resistant to thermal shock, has good thermal conductivity, is relatively light and both have a high operating temperature of over 1500°C. Silicon nitride plays an outstanding role as a rolling body material, for balls or cylindrical rollers, due to its mechanical strength. Si3N4 balls and Si3N4 cylindrical rollers are characterized by good load distribution and surface pressure.
